Everything in No Man’s Sky begins with pointing a beam at a rock. The first hour of the game is mining; so, functionally, is the thousandth — activated indium farms, crashed freighter salvage, storm-glass runs all route back through the mining beam. Which makes the beam’s upgrade path the first build decision every player makes and one of the most under-optimized in the game: a properly built beam strips deposits at several times the speed of a stock one and barely pauses to vent heat.

What the Mining Beam Actually Is

The beam is the multitool’s default core technology: a continuous laser that mines mineral deposits, strips flora for carbon, salvages derelict components, and damages enemies weakly, with no ammunition ever. Its performance rests on four knobs, all upgradeable:

A stock beam is slow and overheats mid-deposit. A built beam chews through an outcrop before the heat bar matters. The difference is entirely the module layer.

The Module Build, Step by Step

1. Confirm the core. The Mining Beam core technology installs by default on every tool. If you somehow removed it, reinstall before anything else.
2. Buy three Mining Beam Upgrades, class S ideally. Technology merchants on station concourses sell them for nanites, stock varying per system — wealthy three-star economies carry better classes, exactly as with S-class ships. The Space Anomaly’s merchant is the fallback. Bring nanites; S-class stock is not cheap.
3. Cluster for adjacency. The three modules go in slots touching the Mining Beam core and each other — same-family grouping is a live stat bonus, visible the moment you move a module. Scattered modules are the most common silent nerf in the game.
4. Supercharge the strongest. If your tool’s supercharged slots aren’t spoken for by a weapon or scanner identity module, the strongest beam upgrade belongs in one. (On a dedicated mining tool, the beam module is the identity — supercharge it without hesitation.)
5. Add heat tech if the loop still stalls. Beam heat-management technologies complement the modules; install when the bar still fills mid-deposit after the module layer is done.

The three-module limit is hard — a fourth same-family module adds nothing. Depth comes from class and placement, not count.

The Advanced Mining Laser: The Unofficial Upgrade Zero

The Advanced Mining Laser is a core technology rather than an upgrade module, and no beam build is finished without it: the base beam cannot complete mining on many high-value targets, while the advanced laser can. The recurring cases:

• Tough ore outcrops that a stock beam ticks to a stop on
• Crashed freighter salvage, where the valuable componentry needs the advanced laser to strip
• Certain quest and dissonance-loop objectives that check for the tech

Acquire it through its blueprint in the normal research flow, craft it, and install it near the beam cluster. It is the single highest-leverage “upgrade” in the beam line and the most common thing new players are missing when they ask why their beam can’t finish a deposit.

Mining as a Weapon (Briefly)

The beam never runs out of ammunition, which makes it the infinite-ammo fallback when a fight outlasts your boltcaster rounds — genuinely useful against the last drone of a wave. Players who industrialize their mining — farm feedstock, refiner chains, money routes — eventually carry a tool where the beam is the identity:
