No Man's Sky Swarm Update (6.4): Everything New, Patch Trail & New Terms
The Swarm update (6.4) explained: swarmer ambushes, boardable pirate freighters, Expedition 22 and the Hive of Glass, plus every new term defined.
The Swarm was 2026’s combat update: version 6.4, released in May, it filled ordinary space flights with coordinated enemy fleets, let you capture the pirate freighters you beat, and ran a three-team community war through Expedition 22. It was also the game’s biggest space-combat rework in years — and the community’s verdict was unusually consistent: the battles are the best large-scale space combat No Man’s Sky has ever delivered.
Last updated: September 2, 2026, current through patch 6.45.1 and the staged Cosmos rollout. This page is the update hub: what 6.4 added, the new terms it introduced, the expedition that shipped with it, and every patch since. For the fight-by-fight mechanics, jump to the swarm battles guide; for the year in updates, the 2026 update tracker covers everything around it.

What the Swarm Update Added
Four things define 6.4:
- Swarmer ambushes. Coordinated enemy ships now ambush routine flights — not set-piece missions, the regular game. Flying unupgraded through unclaimed space became genuinely dangerous overnight, which is exactly the pressure the update wanted.
- Fleet-scale space combat. The fighting is sustained and large-scale, with your freighter summonable into the fray. Community reaction called it the best large-scale space combat in the game’s history.
- Boardable pirate freighters. Beat a pirate freighter and you can now board it, then either demand control (take the hull for yourself) or demand tribute (cargo and units). It is the cheapest route to a freighter in the game — the capture walkthrough covers the full loop and its traps.
- Expedition 22. The seasonal expedition shipped with the update and turned its themes into an eight-week, three-team war with the Hive of Glass as the finale.
The New Vocabulary, Defined
The update introduced its own lexicon. If a patch note, a milestone, or another player uses one of these, here is what it means:
| Term | What it is |
|---|---|
| Swarmer / swarm ship | The coordinated enemy fighters that ambush routine flights in numbers |
| Boarding | Docking a beaten pirate freighter to claim it, instead of destroying it |
| Demand control | The boarding choice that takes the ship itself as yours |
| Demand tribute | The boarding choice that takes cargo and units and leaves the hull |
| Pirate frigates | Mercenary escort ships — hiring them before a capture stops the enemy fleet fleeing |
| Hive of Glass | Expedition 22’s finale encounter, the community war’s closing fight |
| Insectoid Armor set | Expedition 22’s signature cosmetic reward, styled after the Swarm’s chitin-and-glass enemies |
The deep mechanics behind the first five live in the swarm battles guide; the expedition terms are broken down on the Expedition 22 page.
Expedition 22: The Three-Team War
Expedition 22 ran May 27 to July 19, 2026 — about eight weeks — and it played the update’s fiction straight: three player teams fought a community war across the milestones, with the Hive of Glass encounter as the closing set-piece. Rewards followed the insect theme: the Insectoid Armor set as the signature cosmetic, the Swarm expedition decal, and the usual per-phase cosmetics and titles.
The window is closed, but the content is not gone. Past expeditions stay replayable from the expedition terminal on the Space Anomaly on any save, rewards are account-wide once unlocked, and Hello Games’ fall Redux tradition means a Swarm re-run is expected around late October. The Expedition 22 page has the full reward list and both replay routes.
The Patch Trail: 6.4 to 6.45.1
The Swarm shipped as 6.4 in May 2026 and was followed by six patches on a steady cadence:
- 6.41, 6.42 (May) — the first wave of fixes after launch
- 6.43, 6.44, 6.45 (June) — the June stabilization run
- 6.45.1 (June 22, 2026) — the update’s final stable patch, and the version the whole 6.4 family settled on
Practical takeaway: if you played at launch and bounced off a rough edge, 6.45.1 is the version to judge the update by. The recent updates page keeps the full timeline with every patch listed.
What Came After the Swarm
The next update was the big one: Cosmos (6.50), the tenth-anniversary update announced on August 9, 2026, is rolling out in stages — free interstellar flight between star systems, and landing on stars with new heat-resistant gear. Our Cosmos update guide tracks every confirmed detail, and the 2026 update tracker puts Remnant, Xeno Arena, The Swarm, and Cosmos side by side.
Frequently Asked Questions
▸ What is the Swarm update in No Man's Sky?
The Swarm is the May 2026 update (version 6.4) that overhauled large-scale space combat. It added coordinated swarmer ships that ambush routine flights, made beaten pirate freighters boardable so you can demand control or tribute, and shipped alongside Expedition 22, whose three-team community war ended in the Hive of Glass encounter.
▸ When did The Swarm update come out?
May 2026, as update 6.4 — Expedition 22 launched alongside it on May 27. Six follow-up patches followed: 6.41 and 6.42 in May, 6.43 through 6.45 in June, and the stable 6.45.1 on June 22, 2026.
▸ What are swarmers in No Man's Sky?
Swarmer ships are the coordinated enemy fighters the update introduced. They ambush ordinary flights in numbers, and fighting them off is the update's core loop — our swarm battles guide covers loadouts, the ambush pattern, and what pays.
▸ Can I still play Expedition 22 and get the Insectoid Armor?
Yes. Expedition 22 closed on July 19, 2026, but past expeditions stay replayable from the expedition terminal on the Space Anomaly, and rewards are account-wide once unlocked. Hello Games also traditionally re-runs expeditions as Redux in the fall, so a Swarm Redux is expected around late October.
▸ How do you board a pirate freighter?
Beat one in combat first. Once its defenses are down you can dock and choose between demanding control (take the ship) or demanding tribute (cargo and units). Hiring pirate frigates before you claim the hull stops the rest of the fleet from warping away.
▸ What is the current No Man's Sky version?
Cosmos, update 6.50 — the tenth-anniversary update announced on August 9, 2026, still rolling out in stages. It adds free interstellar flight between star systems and landing on stars. The version timeline on our recent updates page tracks every release.
